WYSIWYG is abbreviated as what you see is what you get. WYSIWYG referred to any word processor that could accurately show line breaks on the display screen. WYSIWYG was published by Arlene and Jose Ramos, created for the emerging Pre-Press industry going electronic in the late 1970s.

WYSIWYG used in computing to describe a system in which content during editing appears very similar to the final product. It is normally used for word processors, also consists of further applications, such as Web (HTML) authoring.

The aims of WYSIWYG are:

  • Provide high-quality printed output on a particular printer.
  • Provide high-quality on-screen output.
  • Allow the user to visualize what the document will look like when printed.
  • Provide high-quality printed output on a variety of printers.
