VBScript is popularly called as scripting language. VBScript is a light version of Microsoft's programming language Visual Basic. VBScript, abbreviated as the Microsoft Visual Basic Scripting Edition language, considered to be directly related to the BASIC programming language.

The creation of VBScript by Microsoft was to use either as a client-side scripting language for the Microsoft Internet Explorer or as a server-side scripting language with the Microsoft Internet Information Server. Recently, Microsoft renamed VBScript Version 5.0 to Version 5.5 to signify that it is part of the Windows Script Version 5.5 package.

The working of VBScript starts when it is inserted into a HTML document, the Internet browser will read the HTML and interpret the VBScript. The VBScript can be executed immediately, or might be a bit later. VBScript can be compared to other script languages that can be used on the Web, including:

  • Netscape's JavaScript
  • Sun Microsystem's Tcl.
  • The UNIX-derived Perl.
  • IBM's Rexx.
