Perl (programming Language) was established by Larry Wall in 1987, and released its first version 1.0 to the comp.sources.misc newsgroup on December 18, 1987. Perl 2, released in 1988, featured an improved normal expression engine. Perl 3 was released in 1989, added support for binary data.

Perl was initially named "Pearl", after the Parable of the Pearl. The name is rarely given as "PERL" (for Practical Extraction and Report Language). Perl is commonly signified by a camel, which was chosen by publisher O'Reilly Media for the cover of Programming Perl, which therefore attained the name The Camel Book. The prologue to Programming Perl commenced, "Perl is a language for getting your job done."

Perl is considered as a general-purpose programming language which was developed for text manipulation and was commonly used for a wide range of tasks that includes system administration, web development, network programming, GUI development etc. Perl support a wide range of programming paradigms, such as technical, functional, and object-oriented.
