Hyperlink is defined as an electronic document that links to another place in the same document or to an entirely different document. The term "hyperlink" was discovered in 1965 by Ted Nelson at the beginning of Project Xanadu. Hyperlinks are the most essential of all hypertext systems, including the World Wide Web.

Hyperlinks are part of the World Wide Web created by Tim Berners-Lee, but are not limited to HTML or the web. Hyperlinks are used in almost any electronic media. Hyperlinks are used in e-mails, PDF documents, word processing documents, spreadsheets, Apple's HyperCard and many other places.

There are various ways to configure and present hyperlinks in hypermedia. They are:

  • embedded link
  • Inline link
  • hot area
  • Random-accessed linking data and
  • Hardware-accessed link.
