Active Server Pages abbreviated as ASP, is a server-side scripting language that allows adding interactivity to various Web sites. It is a module of Microsoft’s Web Server software that allows embedding server-side script code in Web pages.

Active Server Pages are normally found on Windows Web servers. Active Server Pages is a server-side development since all the script code runs on the server. It is an arrangement for a dynamically created Web Page with an .ASP extension that makes use of ActiveX scripting.

Active Server Pages signify a primary transition point for developers. It represents the first step in the creation of an application development revolution. Active Server Pages connects the broadly used Visual Basic programming environment to developers to integrate both new and accessible server applications and services.

Active Server Pages consists of five major versions. They are:

• ASP 1.0 in December 1996.
• ASP 2.0 in September 1997.
• ASP 3.0 in November 2000.
• ASP.NET in January 2002.
• ASP.NET version 2.0 released on November 7, 2005.
