The operating system is the interface between the hardware and the user. It helps the user to interact with the hardware. The Kernel in any operating system does the job for interacting with the hardware. More over the operating system briefly referred to as the OS is the major software that is a must for any computer to run.

The OS may be of the following types:

• Single user, Single tasking system.
• Single user, Multi tasking system.
• Multi user, Multi tasking system.

The most popular operating system for the computers is the Microsoft Corporations Windows. The easier usability and better user interface has led to the popularity of this OS. Another most important aspect regarding Windows OS is that they have a lot of documentation and help provided for each section and every section. This makes the user much convenient to use it.

The OS provided by the Microsoft Corporation is charged while the other OS like the Linux and the Unix is free of cost. The OS that is powerful and much secured and widely used for the server is the Linux. The Linux is widely used in the business and critical system development. The Windows is also used in the corporate application development. The feature of Linux is that it is an open source system. But in contrast the Windows OS source code is not available.

Apart from these above discussed OS the other includes the Sun Microsystems Solaris, Apple’s OS MAC and many other. The Ms DOS – Disk Operating System is a command line OS. Usually the computer provided by any brand comes along with an OS that may depend upon the brand manufacturer. The Operating Systems design is a complex process and usually involves core system and assembly level programming with high efficiency. The Unix and the Linux OS are built in C programming language. The Unix OS was developed by Thompson and the Dennis Ritchie (father of C programming language).

After installing the OS the next thing is the installation of other software and entertainment media like games and all. Some times the device driver programs may also be required to be installed. Some of the OS developed by Microsoft Corporation includes Ms DOS, Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, Xp, NT, 2003 Server and the latest release being Windows Vista earlier code named as Windows Long horn. Some major OS of Linux includes the Red hat, SuSe, PC Quest etc and many more.
