The merging of computer and communications has had a profound influence on the way computer systems are organized. The old model of a single computer serving all of the organization’s computational needs has been replaced by one in which a large number of separate but interconnected computers do the job. These systems are called computer network. The very first purpose of networking computers is Resources sharing. Accordingly computer network brings all programs, data and equipments, available to any one on the network, irrespective of the physical location of the resource. For example an organization has powerful computer with large disks for file storage, fast printers, etc. It may have many branch offices in many cities with their own smaller computers, small disks, printer etc. For many applications in the branch office it may find its local computer and data base sufficient. But there may be instances when branch offices need a more powerful computer. In such a case it would be necessary to use the computer in the main office via a computer network from the terminals in the branch offices and transfer the result files back to the branch office for printing locally. Computer networks are preferred because they establish and officer a communication medium through which one can communicate via e-mail. Whenever one wants cost-effective computing with high reliability by having alternative sources of supply, then a computer network is needed. Whenever one want to conduct a virtual meeting, called video conference, to access remotely the useful information to have interactive entertainment then a computer network necessary.
