The term open source refers to the code which can be accessed and modified to meet particular requirements. Like, for example the Linux is an open source operating system. This means that Linux system can be modified or updated to meet certain specific requirements or suit the user needs.

Usually the open source applications or software symbolizes that they are free to be used. They may be free ware, share ware etc. The open source specifies that the software which is developed by using some programming language or other has the code which can be accessed or extracted.
