TCP Mail System

TCP provides end to end connectivity. It means mail software on the sending machine acts as a client contacting a server on the ultimate destination. There is a guarantee that each message remains in the sender’s machines. Until it has been successfully copied to the recipient’s machine.

On the other hand, the systems using non internet sites like mail gateways (also called mail bridges or mail relays or intermediate mail stops), where sender’s machine doesn’t contact the recipients machine directly but sends mail across one or more intermediate machine that forward it. The main disadvantage is there is an unreliability i.e. when a sender transfers the message, to the first intermediate machine, the senders machine removes the local copy of the message.

The primary goal of TCP in offering electronic mail service is interoperability of E-mail. It means TCP divides its mail service into two standards which are interoperable. The first standard specifies the format for mail messages. This is also referred to as 822 derived from Request for Comments (RFC 822) Standard.

The second standard specifies the details e-mail exchange between two computers, that leads to another protocol of TCP/IP suite i.e., simple mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP).

The address format vary among e-mail system. Within the global internet addresses have simple format given by Local part @ domain name.

Where domain name is the domain name of mail destination and local part is the address of a mail box on that machine. Ex: cm @ kntk.gov

The addresses used at mailgateway are complex. These are used outside the global internet i.e., at non internet sites. The general forms of such addresses are

User % domain =name
Or user: domain = name
Ex cm % kntk.gov @ usa.com
