Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions MIME

Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) has defined an extension to allow the transfer of non-ASCII data through e-mail. The extension is called Multipurpose internet Mail Extensions (MIME). The extension allows arbitrary data to be encoded in ASCII and the transmitted in a standard e-mail message.

The MIME standard defines seven basic contains types. The list of these types is as below:

Content Type Data in the Message
Text Text
Image A still photograph or computer generated image
Audio A sound recording
Video A video recording with motion
Application Raw data for a program
Multipart Multiple message with type and encoding
Messsage An entire e-mail message.
