Electronic MailIt is a popular method of transferring information through internet. In the event of any delay in delivery, the mail system uses a technique known as spooling. When the user sends a mail message, the system places a copy in its private storage area along with sender and receiver’s identification and time of deposits. The system then initiates the transfer to the remote machine as background activity. The background mail transfer process becomes a client. The process first uses the Domain Name System (DNS) to map the destination machine name to an IP address and then tries to establish a TCP connection to the main server on the destination machine. If the connection is successful, a copy of message is passed to the remote server, which stores in the spool area. When both client and server agree that copy has been accepted and stored the client removes to local copy. If the connection is not established or fails, the transfer process records the time delivery of the attempt and terminates. The background transfer process sweeps through the spool area periodically, typically once in every 30 minutes. Checking for an undelivered mail. Whenever it finds an undelivered message or a new message, the transfer system tries again. If a mail can’t be transferred after extended time i.e., 3 day the mail software return the message to the sender. Mail forwarded software also includes a mail alias expansion mechanism. A mail forwarding program allows the local site to map identifiers used in mail addresses to a set of one or more new mail addresses. The mail aliases program assists the mail forwarding program. Aliases increase functionally of mail system. It means a single user
can have multiple mail identifies including nicknames send positions.
Thus alias mappings can be many to one or one to many. Aliases also allow
mail exploder that accepts one incoming message and sends it to a large
set of recipients. The set of recipients associated with an identifier
is called an electronic mailing list. Expanding a mail alias into a large
set of recipients is called “List expansion”. It is a popular
technique used widely on mailing systems.
