Uninterrupted Power Supply - UPS

The abbreviation of the UPS is Uninterrupted Power Supply. This is an electrical as well as the electronic equipment. In short it can be considered as the combination both the types of equipments.

The main purpose of this equipment is to provide a total continuity of the AC power to a critical computerized load. This eliminates the disturbances of all types that may exist. This device is so designed so as to provide the power even in the absence of the mains.

The UPS actually draws the AC power from the commercial AC line and processes it to a required condition, at the same time charging the battery which is connected to the UPS. Even if the AC mains fail, it provides an output voltage and also with out any interruptions.

The source of power supply in the case of power failure is the battery. The UPS is necessary equipment in case of the computers. It is required in most of the sophisticated medical equipments and the satellite communication systems etc.
Most of the equipments that require UPS should be run continuously according to the design of such equipments. The examples of which are mentioned above. Even a short interruption may cause a serious disaster. Furthermore, with most of the advancements in the technology of computers it has become an important part of the organization culture.

The UPS also plays an important role since the usage of networks like for example the LAN, WAN, MAN etc. The improper shut down of one system may affect the other systems as well. The power in general keeps a very important role in keeping the systems in working condition.

A most important discussion regarding the UPS also includes the voltage that should be supplied for a given computer system. The voltage that should be supplied is a sine wave. The voltage should also be free from all kinds of distortions.

The AC voltage that is received from the commercial line may consist of the different kinds of distortion like the spikes, surges, blackouts, sags and many such related things.
