Computer Server

When we talk to connect one or more computer networks then we need to understand that the network is made up of the hardware as well as the software components. The hardware consists of the network interface cards and cables etc; while the software includes the drivers for all the peripherals and the Network Operating System – NOS.

The computers and other devices communicate with each other on a network. They are called as the nodes or the workstations. In most of the networks most of the nodes work as the transceivers. This means that they can even transmit and receive messages.

The Server being an important part of a Network runs the NOS and provides the services to the workstations or the individual users. Some of the services that are provided by the server include the file storage, user management, network commands, security and many more options for the users depending upon the type of server that is in use.

Generally the most common type of server is the File server. This is the server that does not need any special hardware. It is just a computer with one or more hard disks. Since the server’s Hard Disk is a shared one, it is typically of a much larger capacity.

Different users access files stored on the file server as if they were using their own hard disks. This allows the sharing of the programs as well as the data. If the sharing is not desired, private disk areas can be set up for the individual users.
File servers may of two types: Dedicated Server and the other being a Non dedicated Server.

The file servers also perform another important function on the network. The printers connected to the server can be accessed directly by all the users of the network. When the program running on a client CPU generates a print command, the file to be printed is transparently diverted to the server and it is sent to the shared printer.

If the printer is busy with some other printing job, each user’s file is converted to a separated file and put in a print queue.
