Small Computer System Interface - SCSIThe abbreviation for the SCSI stands like this - Small Computer System Interface. The pronunciation goes like this “Scuzzy”. This type of interface has been for many years and offers a good alternative to the parallel ATA or even the old IDE that was used for the high-end computers. SCSI interface have many advantages like, it is possible to enable the connection of more devices even more than the normal three hard drives and the CD ROM within the personal computer. The observation was that it was much faster than the regular parallel ATA. Another relatively important advantage of SCSI is that a daisy chain of the different peripherals can be formed using one host adapter, and using only one slot in the bus. But the fact is that the SCSI never does come with the in-built support in the computer. Hence if you are interested in using a SCSI then you need to convert your computer system to the SCSI format. So the SCSI needs an adaptor card. This is used as a host adaptor card. The discussed host adapters are available along with two controllers that are used to support about 30 peripherals. This adaptor was introduced by the Shugart Associates who originally developed it. It was in the year of 1986. The RAID was also originally a SCSI. Till the year of 1990s, the SCSI hard disk drives were the only ones that were used in the RAID configuration. This improved a lot of performance and the fault tolerance capability of the system. This is mainly used in Storage Area Networks – SAN, mainframes and the servers. The SCSI has evolved itself as the better interface but still the serial ATA is considered as the default system interface and happens to be the most popular choice for a system interface. Also the possibility to add several drives like the CD’s and the Zip drives and the hard disk drives have the advantage of using SCSI in a desktop personal computer. It could also connect to the scanner. But as the time passed on and the technology advanced this became less important and the invention of the USB interface continued to dominate. |
