Scanners

The term Scanning refers to examining very closely. In the computer terminology the same is used to describe the feature of a device known as the scanner.

Scanning is a procedure of transferring a physical data or a picture, or any other art, or other similar two-dimensional images to a digital file in the computer. The file may not necessarily be the picture file; it may also be the document file or any other regular file. A scanner is used for the purpose if scanning the desired file.

The scanners are actually optical in nature. The file is scanned by a scanning head which moves as the stationary picture is scanned. There many types of scanners available like: flat bed scanner, sheet-fed scanner, handheld scanner and drum scanner.

In the flat bed scanner there is a flat glass surface that is used to hold up the pages of paper or books or any other objects that needs to be scanned. The scan head then moves under the glass and all over the page.

Sheet fed scanners are usually optional. The importance regarding them is that they allow multiple pages to be scanned simultaneously and even the pages are fed to them automatically.

In the case of the drum scanners the scanning is done as the PMT moves back and forth on a single axis. The image that needs to be scanned is wet -mounted on the drum which means that the oil is used to soak it. The drum is then rotated in front of the PMT. This is the oldest scanner technology that is used.

The handy scanners are the hand – held scanners. The object that needs to be scanned is moved over the scanner manually. The quality of the scanned object is measured in the RGB format that is the Red Green and Blue scale. This symbolizes the intensity of the color and the accuracy by which the object is scanned.

The image can be stored in the desired format in the computer system. The many available formats are .jpeg, .bmp and many picture files.
