Random Access Memory - RAM

Usually there exist the three kinds of memories. The semiconductor memory chips that are most commonly used with the processors or the CPU’s are the following: ROM, PROM, and RAM. Almost each and every system has a central processor that regulates the working of that system.

Hence in each system there also exists some sort of memory, however small it may be. And moreover almost all the systems based on these processors contain all the three types of memories. The systems may be in the development stage or even the production stage.

The case of NMOS: - N – channel Metal Oxide Semiconductor is much different. These memories are currently the cheapest and also the most widely used. The RAM is considered as the primary memory in most systems. This is the fastest and the necessary memory in a system.

The RAM is of two types they are Static RAM and the other is the Dynamic RAM. Both of these are volatile in nature. This means that their contents get lost at the slightest disruption of power services.

The static RAM is used to store the CMOS configuration of an AT machine as the power consumption in its case is quite low. The battery can be used to provide the back up. The battery could be even an external back up.

These static RAMs are usually considered as the 8 – bit RAMs that are individual address lines to access all the memory cells. The dynamic RAM is the most advantageous one in comparison with the static RAM. The advantage stands in difference due to its size.

More number of memory cells can be integrated in a DRAM chip (where DRAM stands for the abbreviation). But the organization of the DRAM is a bit complicated. It is organized as a 1 – bit output and the address lines are multiplexed internally. The addressing procedure is a Row Address Strobe (RAS) and the Column Address Strobe (CAS). Even the output is only one data bit per RAS and one data bit per CAS.

The most major brands in the market available include the Hynix, Hondio etc. The primary memory is very easily susceptible to damage. Care should be taken so that the magnetic material is always at a distance from them.
