Proxy Servers

A server is an important component of a dedicated server network. The server runs the network operating system and offers network services to the users at their individual workstations. The Proxy server is shortly also referred to as the “Proxy”.
The proxy server is nothing but a network server where in all the computers on a network must go through; in order to access the net. It may be a computer system or a router. The important aspect is that it helps in preventing attacks form an attacker.

The proxy server sits between the client and the server to provide security. Also this is one of the tools that are used to build the firewall type applications. In General English the word proxy means the “to act on behalf of another”.

The technical definition can be provided as computer network service that allows the client to make indirect network connection to other network services. The major advantages of the proxy server include the speed of the network and the browsing performances.

This is achieved by using its own cache system. The services offered by a server include the file storage, security, user management, network commands, and the options for the users etc. this all depends upon the type of the server. The most common type of server is the File server.

Another advantage of using the proxy server is that they will filter what the users on a network can access. Hence the content security over the internet can be provided. Some of the websites that are specific can be completely blocked. Hence it is used in most of the companies.

They can act as very efficient firewall which makes it attractive towards the Network administrator. Hence it can secure the data that is considered as sensitive. It can be called as the watch dog that guards against attacks and attempts from any unauthorized access.

There are many types of proxies available, they include the web proxies, network address translation proxies, transparent proxies, open proxies, reverse proxies, split proxies etc.
