Peripheral Component Interconnect PCI

The abbreviation stands for the Peripheral Component Interconnect. The analogy was drawn from the fact that it was used for the Input Output devices. It may be considered as a type of Input Output system bus interface.

The use of this card enables the communication between two interfaces of a computer. This can be explained as it provides the shared data path between the CPU and the peripheral controllers. Also this is the most common I/O used these days. This is used in almost all types of computers from desktop to the laptops, Mainframes etc.

The technology of this PCI was introduced in the year of 1993. This also is designed by many of the computer manufacturers like the Intel, Compaq etc. In the present age these are used in many computers for the purpose of display adapters. The PCI and the AGP slots are provided in almost all the motherboards.

If this is to be used, then the PCI bus system requires the PCI controller card. This PCI controller card should be installed in the computer. There are a number of boards that use the PCI interface. Even this card is found on some of the video cards and almost all sound cards.

The present speed of this PCI is about 33 Mega Hertz. But the improvement is being considered that can expected to double the speed of the PCI. The improved one has the speed of about 66 Mega Hertz.

The corresponding speed in terms of data transfer is about 32 bits for the 33 Mega Hertz and about 64 bits in the 66 Mega hertz. More than one PCI buses are connected by the “PCI Bridge”. The PCI in contrast with the ISA shares the interrupt.
Usually there are about three or four PCI slots in the motherboard and apart from these PCI slots there are even slots for the sound card or the AGP cards as well. The PCI expansion slots could be used for many purposes like using the sound cards, video cards, AGP cards and many other including the TV tuner cards also.

The LAN card and the fax or modem devices are mainly used in these PCI expansion slots.
