Operating System Installation

Operating Systems are available in plenty these days and gone are the days when you had to use command line operating systems. The installation processes being made easier than ever. The installation procedure includes first a start up boot disk to be prepared and the using that the system be started. The operating system installation can then be processed in a simple and convenient manner.

The installation along the Microsoft Windows is very much easier and the process comes along with a lot of documentation. After booting the system with the start up disk, the OS CD ROM should be inserted ant the setup program should be run. The setup will automatically take you to the installation process. There needs to be the selection of customized options. The first thing that will be required is the disk drive that in which it should be installed. The resetting of date and time will be required to enter along with the time zone.

The process will also require the user to agree with the license terms and conditions. After that the product key will be required. The installation won’t proceed until and unless the appropriate key is entered. Then the system files will be copied and the program files will be set. The system may need to be restarted a lot of times during this process.

The hardware configuration is detected and the drivers in case of higher versions of the operating systems will be installed automatically. Lest the drivers need to be installed manually after the OS is completely setup. The operating system is upgradeable. Almost all the other versions of the Windows have similar installation. The installation may slightly vary depending upon the type of operating system. The Linux operating system installation is quite a complex process that will be discussed in the following section.

The Linux is a strong OS and is a little bit complex as compared to the Windows. But the features of security are much important when considering it as an option for the server installation. The installation process starts with either the start up disk or the bootable CD. The CD in most of the versions of Linux has the option for partitioning the drive. There needs to be three logical partitions in the Linux installation; one being the boot, swap, and the other being the root. The boot partition will store the information regarding the boot loader. The popular among the boot loaders is the Grub. Then the partition of swap should have at least the space that is double of that of RAM. The root is the main partition where the user works and the system files reside.

The partitions can also be made using the third party software like the Partition Magic. It easily creates the required Linux partition. Also the file system in Linux is different from that of the Windows. Some OS like the Sum Solaris needs particular type hardware to be installed.
