Multimedia in a computer means that the system is able to perform as a combined use of graphics, audio, video and animation also. A multimedia computer includes a CD ROM at least along with a set of speakers. The DVD drive may add up to the enhancement of the system.

The definition of the Multimedia says that it is the incorporation of sound, animation, still images, hypertext and video integrated under the control of a computer program.

Multimedia computer can do a lot of things like running a digital video in a window on the desktop. It also involves the music and the audios that would enhance the entertainment of a user. Multimedia has started to play an increasingly important role in today’s computer. The computer games also come under the multimedia category.

Let us consider the meaning of the word multimedia. The term multi means many and the term media means a form of communication. The multimedia computer uses a monitor that has enhanced performance while playing the graphical animations. The Sound and the Video cards also adds up to multimedia hardware. The AGP card is solely used for the purpose of enhancing the graphics capability of the system.

Essentially a multimedia system is a combination of the following things:

The hardware devices that can serve as an interface to the digital computer which includes all the supporting cards and the devices like the CD Drives and the DVD Drives etc.

The software that processes and integrates the information as well as the performance of the system. The software includes the media players, media editing tools, driver programs etc.

The hypertext and the hypermedia are the main components of the internet. The hypertext is the formatted text over the internet sites and the enhanced graphical images present over the internet. The animation also adds much to multimedia industry.

Like the IT boom the multimedia has also established itself in the market and has carved out a niche in itself. The most of the picture sequences from the movies and the stunts are all designed using the concept of multimedia animation.
