Computer Mouse an Input Device

For a Layman computer user, the mouse is the most essential thing if he needs to use a computer. The device is purposely designed to support the Graphical User Interface or the GUI. The mouse is most suitable device for fast handing and easier browsing of the computer. It some times becomes essential in the cases like internet browsing, web site browsing. Here there are so many options that using keyboard becomes very much frustrating; although the keyboard is sufficient for the input device.

The most important usage of mouse is as a gaming device. The mouse is much convenient to use rather than a joystick. The mouse provides fast and easy access to the user desired options.

The mouse is also an important device in a computer. The mouse movements are corresponded by an arrow over the screen which enables the user to move the arrow over the monitor screen. The mouse in its standard form consists of two buttons. The click of the buttons causes an event to occur.

One is the left click button and the other is the right click button. Usually by default the left button is used for the event. The right button offers a menu and some options when clicked over. And more over the positions of the two buttons could be interchanged as desired. The mouse pointer moves all over the monitor screen. The mouse may even have a third button. Such mouse is called as the three button mouse. They are mostly advantageous for the games.

Presently many designer mice are available. The mouse was invented by Doug Engelbart in the early 60’s at the SRI – Stanford Research Institute. In contrast with the present mice the first mouse had two wheels perpendicular to each other. The present generation mouse has the ball and it uses the principles of coordinate geometry by assuming the (x, y) coordinate.

The mouse may be in the serial, USB, PS/2 etc. The different mouse connects to the different ports. The mouse may be mechanical or the optical. The optical mouse utilizes the light reflection property to make the cursor move on the screen. Some mice also have trackball that could be used as the mouse itself.

The mouse can also be wireless. The wireless mice are slightly expensive as compared to the regular mice. The brand names in the market are the Microsoft, iBall, Samsung, Logitech etc.
