Computer Motherboard

Motherboard device is a complex circuit in the computer that houses the connections for almost all the peripherals. The motherboard is also called as the main board. The nick name follows as the “mobo”. This is the most important part of the computer after the processor.

There are slots over the motherboard where the processor and the RAM, IDE devices like the Hard Drive, Optical Drives and the Floppy drive can be plugged in. The motherboard also contains the ports for the driver cards like the LAN card, Video Card, Sound Card etc.

The motherboard sometimes or the present generation motherboard contain the inbuilt sound and video drivers. The BIOS chip, the chipset are all in-built in it.

But this was not the case with the earlier motherboards. They had the slots for each of the drivers like the display driver, sound driver, etc. But the integration of these slots in present day motherboards has led to the name of “Integrated System” & “System board”.

The motherboards can be AT or ATX. The AT motherboards are those where the power supply if shut down does not automatically switch off the computer. The ATX motherboard is the one where in the shut down from the operating system switches off the cabinet case.

The motherboard should be also compatible with the processor and the RAM. The motherboard for a P3 processor could not be used for a P4 processor. The motherboard compatible to the P4 should be used. The important part of the motherboard is the chipset that is inbuilt in it. A chipset is group of chips designed to work as a unit to perform a specific function.

The popular chipsets in the motherboard include the Intel, Via, Amiga, nForce, NVIDIA etc. The BIOS – Basic Input Output System is the part embedded in the motherboard that performs the operations when the system boots up. The CMOS settings enable the user to set the conditions as per hi/her requirements.

The BIOS is an EPROM; it can be upgraded with some specific software. The recommended motherboards are those that have extendable PCI slots and the DIMM slots for the RAM. The motherboard that is upgradeable is a much better one. The slots for the SD RAM and the DDR RAM are different in the motherboard. A PC chipset acts as the electronic interfaces between all subsystems.

The Expansion slots are present in the motherboard that enhances the features. The different types of these slots are determined by the manufacturer. The most common slot types are as follows: ISA, PCI, AGP, PCI Express etc.

If the person involved with gaming has a serious attitude towards it then the graphics-intensive motherboard needs to be used. The most popular motherboards are the Intel 810e, Intel 845, Intel 865, Intel 915, Intel 915 X etc. The MSI motherboard, and the Gigabyte motherboard are doing well in the market. Apart from these the motherboard by Asus is also doing rounds in providing tough competition in the present market.
