Micro Computer

A Micro Computer is a small compact relatively inexpensive and a complete general purpose computer. The micro computer occupies a table space in room. Micro computers have basic arithmetic and logic computation capability and a limited secondary memory but designed to suit for many general purpose data processing applications. Ofcourse basically micro computers are single-user computer i.e., one person can work on them at a time.

Micro computers are used as personal computer (PCs) they can be used in Banks, offices, share market, Railway and Airways scheduling etc. PC was developed in 1975.

Home computers are primarily designed for entertainment like playing games, displaying pictures and for basic education, simple calculation etc. the home computers are much slower than personal computers and have limited computing capabilities. Home computers can make use of television set in the house as output unit like VDU and just a keyboard is more than enough to be used as an input unit. The cost of home computers is relatively cheaper than pc cost. Ready made cassettes containing science, Geography, Mathematics lesson can be displayed with the use of home computers. Simple calculations like home accounts, income and expenditure account can be manipulated and balanced with thee home computers.

Time sharing permits multiple users to access the services of the central computer simultaneously on a time-shared basis. Users sitting on their terminals can instead with the computer, by feeding their programs and data, requesting other services and calling the system for data processing.

Advantages of time sharing systems are many users can work simultaneously with a single computer. Single computer is attending the different data processing tasks of many user at different stages. Normally a mini computer is used for time shared data processing applications.

For example:

Students in an engineering college may be working on a mini-computer in a batch of say 10 students. They every student requirements will be handled by the minicomputer on a time-shared basis. One student is busy on his interactive terminal with COBOL programming. The other two may be accessed system facilities. A few of them may be playing video games on their terminals. All these users requirement are handled by the minicomputer system on-time shared, priority basis. Such that each and every student may get a feeling of having his own computer serving him only.
