Input Output I/O Connectors and Installation

The I/O or the Input Output Connectors are used to connect the devices like the keyboard or the monitor that are the input and the output devices. The I/O connections are pre installed on the ATX motherboard. The I/O connections in case of an AT motherboard needs to be manually installed.

The AT motherboard; has the slot insertions. It also has the parallel and serial ports that are available in those kinds of motherboards. They are simply screwed up into expansion slot and the sockets are available at the rear end of the case.

Obviously the AT motherboards were made earlier and at present there manufacturing has ceased. Since the motherboard was made at that time it had the support and the slots pertaining to that period only. And the current user may obviously like to further enhance and upgrade the system according to his new evolving needs and changes in the requirements.

Hence the user will desire to have more expansion slots and would like to install these expansion cards. But the expansion slots may be occupied already. Now the solution will be to move those slot insertions. In many such cases the vacant port holes are usually covered with some metal caps which need to be removed in order to be used by the serial and the parallel ports.

Also some slots have to be fixed over the specified location. These slots should exactly match the pins in the card else there will be obvious problems. And always a helping hand exists so proceed.

The motherboard manual provides much needed support when these connections are to be made. Clearly identify the sockets where these cards are to be plugged in. The motherboard manual definitely describes the procedures that are better and appropriate, which will also include identifying the correct connectors for the different ports.

The port connectors are generally labeled as PRINT for the printer or LPT1, COM1 and COM2. For the COM1 connector the serial mouse utilizes it. Similarly the keyboard and the monitor connectors should be used and cab be installed.

The PS2 or the USB mouse or some other device like the web cam can also be connected similarly.
