Operating System Booting Process

When the computer is assembled now it’s the time for booting up the computer. It means that the system needs to be started. But for the first time the system cannot boot by itself hence a boot disk is necessary. The installation for the operating system also requires the initial boot up.

The initial boot up is usually done by a system start up disk. This disk can be prepared using a floppy disk. The CD ROM provided by the hard disk manufacturer can also be used for the purpose. The Boot up installation disk of the operating system that is to be install can also be used for the purpose of initial boot up.

But the most common procedure of initial boot is that of booting the system by a start up floppy disk. The Microsoft Operating systems provides the option for preparing the start up boot disk. The operation makes the necessary start up files to be copied over to the disk. This ensures and helps a lot during the period of trouble shooting.

The first thing to be done when utilizing the start up floppy boot disk is to ensure that the BIOS settings are enabled for the Floppy drive as the first option. Hence now a start up floppy boot disk should be inserted in the drive and the system be switched on.

The start up disk ensures that most of the important commands are copied over to the disk and the primary operating system is MS DOS. This helps a lot when the process of trouble shooting is carried over. The boot up disk displays some options like starting the system with CD ROM support or with out support. It scans all the IDE devices connected and the PCI and the bus scan is completed.

The boot up disk also has the option for the format and the scandisk commands included. The most basic commands like the directory listings in the desirable extensions are also available. The commands like that of the copy, move, Edit – the text editor are also available.

The more complex commands like the fdisk used for partitioning the drive, format for completely erasing the data, delete the files and directories, etc are also available. The scandisk and checkdisk ensures that the hard disk drive is in excellent working condition. Sometimes the problem may be of the RAM not properly held hence the system may make sounds and may not even boot up.
