Integrated Device Electronics IDE

IDE stands for Integrated Device Electronics. This is recalled as the earlier name for ATA (parallel). The other abbreviation also stands for the Integrated Development Environment. The Integrated Development Environment is a set of programs that are run from the single user interface. The suitable example is that a programming language includes the text editor, compiler, debugger, etc. They are all clubbed and have active functions to perform. They come under the Integrated Development Environment.

The other abbreviation that is the Integrated Device Electronics means that it is a type of hardware interface that is widely used to connect the hard ware devices in the computer like the floppy drive, hard drive, CD Drive etc. The mother board has a connection socket where the devices should be plugged in.

Cheaply available is the property that makes it available for most of the computer systems. In comparison with the SCSI connector interface the IDE is much cheaper.

The IDE was introduced in the year of 1980. There are jumpers that can be used to determine whether the drive is a master or a slave. If there are more than one drives then it should be determined which one needs to be the master and which one needs to be the slave. Unless this is clarified the computer system will not be able to make out the master and the slave configuration.

The ATAPI stands for the abbreviation of Advanced Technology Attachment Packet Interface. This was designed for the CD ROM drives. In consideration ATAPI is actually devised for the drives like the CD Drive and the DVD Drive.

After the introduction of the ATA and its popularity the newer versions were introduced and the number was increased as the technology advanced. Like for example the ATA-2, ATA-3 etc. The ATA-2 was called as the Fast ATA as the transfer rate doubled. The Enhanced IDE that is the EIDE has much more faster rates.

When the ATA-4 was introduced, the word "Ultra" was added as the name and various combinations were formed. For example, at the speed of 33 MBytes/sec, the name was like Ultra ATA or the name ATA-33 was used. Again the introduction was made for the Ultra ATA-33 and DMA-33.

The new technology like S.M.A.R.T - Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology also found its place. This is the drive technology. It reports its own degradation and enables the user’s operating system to warn the user of any potential failure. This was included in EIDE drives with the ATA-3 having specification.
