Hyper threading

The hyper threading technology was introduced by the Intel Corporation. This is the core technology to the present market base of the organization. The Intel offers this technology along with its latest processor; the Pentium IV. Before this the earlier processors didn’t had this type of technology.

A Thread in the technology usually means a process. The hyper threading technology introduced means that the processor has the capacity of processing two processes simultaneously. The processor designed using this technology can process at higher speed as compared to the processor with same clock cycle.

A processor of this type is a high-performance computer with an architecture which simulates some degree of overlap by executing two or more than two independent instruction sets.

Using this technique the processor makes the operating system assume that there are two processors in the computer. The processor acts as if there is a logical processor in side the computer. And the operating system assumes that there are two processors.

This technology utilizes additional registers that can overlap two instruction streams to achieve high performance. The overall performance may increase by 30%. This is very much useful for the multithreaded applications. The systems acts like a dual processor system. But the actual system performance does not match that of the real dual processor system.

This technology has its debut in the processors that were used as the servers like the Intel Xeon. The technology was then adapted to the general purpose processors also. The technology that was used in the Xeon processors was called as the Super Threading technology from which this hyper threading technology has its origin.

The response time increases and so is the number of users the system can support. The technique works by duplicating the certain sections of the processors usually those that are architecture based. But it does not duplicate those that are main executing resources. Hence the processor can pretend as if there are two processors. The operating system assumes the same and considers that there are two processors.

This makes the operating system to schedule two processes simultaneously. Hence the over all performance increases considerably.
