Firmware

The firmware is the software that is permanently stored over a chip. It usually contains the instructions that are coded in some type of programming language. Earlier the firmware was the term that was used for the program that was encoded in the BIOS.

But now there are many other components that are used in the computers or many parts of the computer use firmware. The other parts of the computer that use the firm ware are the host adaptors, disk controllers, LAN cards and this type of firm ware is also used in the sound cards and the VGA cards the are used for display purpose; in other words video cards and many other device.

Firmware updates are also available. Like for example the award BIOS manufacturers release updates as and when required. These updates are usually for the mother boards. This can be used as an effective measure against the bugs that may occur in the system.

The firmware also specifies that the software once embedded in the chip cannot be again erased completely erased. It can only be upgraded. These firm wares usually enhance the performance of the system.

The memory chips that are mostly used for along with the firmware are EPROM-electrical programmable memory and EEPROM-Erasable electrical programmable memory. Most of the computer experts argue that the up gradation should be carried out by the people having sound knowledge of how the system works.
