What is Computer?

Computer is an electronic machine, that can solve problems by accepting data, performing certain operations and presenting the results of those operation under the direction of detailed step by step instructions.

Computer has three special features which makes them so useful to man – speed, accuracy and storage of information or memory.

Speed:

A computer can add and subtract numbers, compared letters to determine alphabetic sequence, more and copy numbers and letters. As such there is nothing profound in this operations. What is significant is the speed with which the computer does carry out these operations. This speed varies from few microsecond. For instance, a small computer, a small computer can evaluate investment decisions by performing hundreds of thousands of machine operations in a second.

Accuracy:

A computer will do all the calculation without making any mistake. Computers are designed to avoid errors. They are the machine with a high degree of reliability.

Reliability:

Computer output is generally very reliable, subject to the conditions that the input data entering the computer should be correct and the program instructions should be reliable and correct. Incorrect input data and unreliable programs gives us computer errors and wrong results. Hence, the phrase GARBAGE – IN – GARBAGE OUT (GIGO).

Storage:

A computer can store a large amount of information.
