Compact Disk Rewritable CD R/W

The CD-RW optical disk can be repeatedly written and over written as with a magnetic disc. The “phrase change” which is purely optical approach has proved efficiently.

The phrase change disk uses a material that has been two significantly different reflectivities in two different phase states and they are Amorphous State and Crystalline State.

Amorphous state, in which the molecules exhibit a random orientation and reflects lightly poorly whereas crystalline state has a smooth surface that reflects light well.

A beam of laser light can change the material from one phase to another. It can be used between 500,000 to 1,000,000 erase cycles.

The primary disadvantages is that the material eventually (gradually) and permanently loses its desirable properties.
